Recent works…

Some of these pieces are waiting for a home….I am tempted to hang on to them as a memento of my existence here in San Antonio.

new pieces in the studio

These are images of some new tiles, these are all done using the same technique.  None of these pieces were made by a mold, the form is built from slabs, when the clay is still wet the black line image is incised onto the surface using both an exacto knife and needle tool.  After the clay has fully dried (usually takes 2 weeks) then it can be placed in the kiln for the bisque firing.  After this, glaze is applied into to give it a rich, bright finish to catch the eye and really bring out the illustration.  They are all made to hang on the wall easily.  Due to their hollow form they are extremely light weight.  I have sent all these tiles to If Art Gallery and intend to send any future similar pieces to this venue!!! Enjoy!

Collaborative work with Carolina Quiroga Stultz

I have had the privilege and honor of getting to know and also watch the performances of the Colombian born professional storyteller Carolina Quiroga Stultz.  She has an interest in stories originating from Latin America—and uses her craft to educate and shed light upon the richness of culture in this region.  In the fall we are going to be exhibiting a collaborative project at several venues in San Antonio.  It will take place around the date of Dia dos los muertos  October 31- November 2(day of the dead) and thematically  the stories and sculptures will be used to honor this celebration. I highly recommend checking out her website and youtube channel, you can listen while you’re working in the studio!—-it isn’t the same as seeing her live, but it’s the second best thing! Come to San Antonio and watch it in real time!!!       http://www.carolinastoryteller.com/

stay posted for progress on this project

The pictures I am posting are works in progress, these two sculptures are 85% finished, hopefully to be completed within the next couple of weeks.  Neither Carolina or I have ever collaborated on a project quite like this before, so we’ll see what happens.  The ultimate intention for us is to learn from this experience, grow as artists, and communicate with our community.

new work This is the first time I’ve made a base using a mosaic technique.  I enjoyed this process and will do it again very soon.  It look intimidating but it’s fairly easy.  If anybody wants to know what products I used or anything else about it—-just ask.

This is one of the first pieces I made after arrival to San Antonio from North Carolina. It's a giant tear with more tears with more tears. He's wearing a cowboy hat and a huge belt buckle with 'Texas' engraved upon it. All while being poised on top of the Alamo. Surrounded by cacti, a boot, a bleached bull skull, and Davy Crockett's hat. This cry baby is wearing snails for shoes and he holds an empty beer bottle. I really am enjoying Texas. I think moving for anybody can be tricky. Especially when you are leaving behind a job that you love along with your friends and family. There's such an element of excitement too. I've come to the conclusion it takes at least a year to adjust to a new city. This sculpture epitomizes how I felt after arrival here...it was just something I had to go through.

current state of the Studio

it has been a couple weeks since I last used my screen printing kit. I am going to make a couple of tshirts and maybe a bag or two. They will be available on etsy soon. It has been several weeks since I last posted anything. my goal was to have a new post every couple days. Not quite sure what my problem is. I even signed up on wordpress to get weekly reminders that it is time to make a post—-jeez—-how am I ever gonna take over the world at this rate. I need to be less shy and more of a cape wearing, chin up, shoulders back kinda lady. I wish I was more of a voyeur with heaps of self confidence. I’m working on it—too bad I can’t build dignity out of clay.

Unfired Clay plate with screen

I don’t understand why I haven’t ever gotten into this process before. I am not that excited when it comes to mass producing a product. That is why I prefer to use hand built methods over the wheel or mould. (I love wheel and mould work though…thinking about joining ‘the other side’) I love to draw individual themes and make each ceramic work really different. The temptation has been overwhelming however. I bought a DIY screen printing kit and decided to add some t-shirts to my etsy account—-and while I’m at it, I might as well make some transfers with underglaze and newsprint. This process is incredibly easy and I am digging the outcome. If anyone has questions about the products I used and the methods I would be more than happy to answer them.
